According to research, swaddling babies assists better quality sleep in the first few months. Helping keep babies on their back increases peace of mind and reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Limb movement allows baby to calm down, resettle and stay covered meaning longer, uninterrupted periods of sleep.
-
Safety First
The Joey Pouch® allows for movement of arms and legs. Babies can sleep in their natural ‘arms up’ position and frog their legs to protect against hip dysplasia. Our Joey Pouch prevents baby's startle reflex and stops baby from scratching their face. Once baby can rock n’ roll from back to tummy, it’s time to transition to the Joey Pod Transitional Swaddle or the Joey Swag® baby sleeping bag if you want to progress baby straight to free arm movement.
-
Comfy Counts
Our Joey Pouch is different. While there’s slight pressure around your baby’s body, it’s designed to be comforting and not straight-jacket like. Rest assured that the Joey Pouch® allows for movement for baby's arms and legs – they can even frog and kick with our bell shaped swaddle design.
-
Easy Peasy
In the Joey Pouch®, baby can self-soothe and settle by sucking on thumbs, finger or hands otherwise restrained. Bubbaroo design with ease in mind – night time feeding without needing to unwrap baby, bottom opening zip for quick nappy change and safer handling of wrapped bub.
-
The Joey Pouch® is made from beautiful light-weight 100% knitted cotton waffle fabric which can be used all year round. Containing no elastane, it's gentle on bub's skin and is machine washable

FAQ
Swaddling a newborn child is performed for a number of reasons. First and foremost it prevents the Startle or Moro Reflex by making your baby feel like it is comfortably wrapped similar to inside their mother’s womb. Bubbaroo’s Joey Pouch Swaddle enables baby to self-soothe and settle safely, without scratching their face, by sucking on thumbs, fingers or hands through the soft lightweight 100% knitted cotton waffle fabric. The Joey Pouch Swaddle helps your baby sleep on their back which increases peace of mind and reduced the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Bubbaroo design with ease in mind – night time feeding without needing to unwrap baby, bottom opening zip for quick nappy change and safer handling of wrapped baby. Rest assured that the Joey Pouch Swaddle is unique in that it allows for movement of your baby's arms and legs – they can even frog and kick with our bell shaped design. Not a straight jacket in sight. No pinning down your baby's arms or forcing their arms into a certain position.
Bubbaroo recommends that once your baby shows signs that they're about to roll from their back to their tummy then it's time to transition out of swaddling. You can read more about transitioning out of swaddling in our article here. Our Joey Pod Transitional Swaddle can be used to transition baby out of the swaddle and can be used in 3 ways. If you want to go "cold turkey" on the swaddling or your baby is already rolling then it is time to introduce the Joey Swag® baby sleeping bag. On average, a baby can roll between 4-6 months, however all babies develop at different stages, so it is important to watch your baby's growth and adapt accordingly.
Bubbaroo prides itself on its strict adherence to Australian and European safety standards and are personally quality controlled by Bubbaroo as well as independent third-party testing and quality control agencies. We have a saying at Bubbaroo that a product is only as good as what it’s made from and that’s why we insist on premium quality of materials and craftsmanship. We use 100% knitted cotton waffle for our Joey Pouch Swaddle, YKK zips and YKK press studs.
Starting to swaddle your baby shortly after birth will eliminate baby's confusion of being tightly wrapped. Crying during or shortly after being swaddled is not an indication that your baby doesn’t like to be swaddled. Adjusting to space is a big thing for a newborn baby so swaddling baby is something to persevere with as the soothing benefits of swaddling helps baby relax, feel secure and stay calm.
We recommend that you start with two Joey Pouch Swaddling Wraps. Baby’s can be messy - with poonamis or spitting up and therefore having two Joey Pouch® swaddles allows you to have one on your baby and the other in the wash. We recommend the great value Newborn Pack which includes one Joey Pouch® swaddle and one Joey Swag baby sleeping bag 1.0 TOG baby sleeping bag.
Yes! Bubbaroo’s Blankies® are safe to use in your nursery in the cooler months and great to use when you’re out and about too. It is recommended by SIDS to use as little as possible in your baby's cot for safety reasons and to tuck the Blankie® into the bottom of the cot. It's important to remember than a light-weight swaddle is recommended as a baby is cocooned in a swaddle. Once asleep be sure to check your baby's temperature by placing a hand on your baby's chest to ensure they're comfortably warm and not too hot.
Yes, right from birth is a great time to start using the Joey Pouch Swaddle Wrap. It is a lightweight 0.5TOG which is suitable for all year round use. It's available in one size and fits bubs up to 70cm long and Bubbaroo recommends a minimum weight of 3.2 kg/7lbs and a maximum weight of 8kg 17.6lbs.
Your baby's natural sleep position is the perfect sleep posture. The Joey Pouch Swaddle is bell-shaped to make certain that your baby can frog kick and are comfortable at all times.
The Joey Pouch Swaddle Wrap comes with a handy guide of What to Wear per below, based on the temperature of your baby's room. Once asleep check that your baby is comfortably warm and not too hot by placing a hand on their chest. Feeling your baby's hands or feet is not a good guide as to whether your baby is too hot or too cold as babies are unable to regulate their temperature.

The Joey Pouch® has a TOG/Warmth rating of 0.5TOG. Please remember that swaddling is different from a baby sleeping bag as your baby is wrapped up or cocooned and this is why SIDS organisations recommend using a light-weight swaddle.
We do not recommend using a baby sleeping bag over a swaddle due to the overheating risk.
The Joey Pouch® is made from 100% natural knitted cotton waffle which is super comfy and breathable. We use Internationally recognised testing agencies to test all our fabrics to ensure there are no harmful chemicals or substances used.
Our Joey Pouch Swaddle Wraps have been tested for all types of nasties and meet strict guidelines. Bubbaroo believes in babies being able to self-soothe and the benefits of doing so whilst swaddled. Self-soothing is great to relax baby and helps them to settle back to sleep on their own. We recommend that the Joey Pouch® is washed regularly depending on use and soiling.
Yes! PROVIDED the car seat/ capsule straps are fitted securely over baby's shoulders with arms on either side of the arm straps and legs either side of the safety harness. The Joey Pouch is so light-weight without padding, it's akin to a thin cotton garment.
It is recommended that a baby sleeps with its arms bent and hands in their natural sleep position up near their face. The Joey Pouch allows your baby to have their arms up without forcing them into this position. Baby can then get their hands to their mouth to self-soothe.
The Bubbaroo Joey Pouch is different. While there’s slight pressure around your baby’s body, it’s designed to be comforting and NOT straight-jacket like. Rest assured that the Joey Pouch® allows enough movement for their arms and legs – they can even frog and kick with our bell-shaped swaddle design. The Joey Pouch® lets your baby sleep in their natural ‘arms up’ position and protects against hip dysplasia. Our Joey Pouch can prevent babies' startle reflex and stop them from scratching their face. Once bub can rock n’ roll from back to tummy, it’s time to transition to the Joey Swag® baby sleeping bag if you want to progress bub straight to free arm movement. In the Joey Pouch®, bub can self-soothe and settle by sucking on thumbs, fingers or hands otherwise restrained. Bubbaroo design with ease in mind – nighttime feeding without needing to unwrap baby, bottom opening zip for quick nappy change and safer handling of wrapped bub.
Yes. Swaddling is safe provided your baby is swaddled correctly. Safe swaddling involves comforting your newborn from their own startle reflex, but not restricting all natural movement. For healthy development, newborns need to breath freely, have some movement of their arms and be able to frog and kick their legs. At Bubbaroo, we have been concerned about the restrictive nature of many of the products on the market. When Nicole Cassey developed the Joey Pouch Swaddle Wrap it was specifically designed with a bell-shaped bottom to ensure full hip flex in newborns and freedom to kick their legs. Equally, whilst soothing newborns by calming their startle reflex, babies wrapped in the Joey Pouch Swaddle can still move their arms and hands and self-soothe by sucking on their fingers through the swaddle if they wish.
The Joey Pouch is also made from light-weight, breathable 100% cotton waffle fabric, keeping baby covered but not at risk of overheating. Safe swaddling has also been proven to reduce the risk of SIDS as it encourages babies to stay sleeping on their back in a safer sleep position.
Once your baby can rock n’ roll from back to tummy, it’s time to transition to the the Joey Swag® baby sleeping bag.
Yes! Switching to the Joey Pouch before bub can roll from their back to their tummy is fine or our Joey Swag baby sleeping bags. The Joey Pouch® is unique as it allows for natural bub movement. The Joey Pouch® has a comfortable fitting which reaps the benefits of swaddling and is not a straight jacket like many other competitors on the market. Bubbaroo is anti-mass market and we believe you will see, feel and love the high quality of all Bubbaroo’s products.
Yes, a great benefit of the Joey Pouch® is that is helps contain your baby's wandering hands in those early weeks while breastfeeding. Using the Joey Pouch Swaddle whilst breastfeeding will help your baby to feel comfortable and relaxed which can help your baby to latch to the breast and ease feeding time in those initial stages of establishing breastfeeding, especially during the night-time feeding or dream feeding your baby.
The best time to swaddle is when baby is already calm and relaxed. If your baby is starts to protest you can apply light pressure and continue to swaddle to help your baby ease into the swaddle and help to calm them down.
Yes, the Joey Pouch is made out of 100% knitted cotton waffle fabric, which is lightweight and soft to the touch.
Whilst your baby was growing in the womb, they are snuggled 24 hours a day. Bubbaroo recommends that baby's need to be awake to explore tummy time and other engaging activities. Newborns can be swaddled in their Joey Pouch Swaddle for all sleeps and may be some feeds with swaddle time decreasing as your baby gets older. Once your baby is at the 2-4 month age the Joey Pouch should be used with naps and sleep time and the rest of their adventurous day your baby can be stretching, exploring, bathing, feeding and changing. Remember that once baby can roll from back to tummy it is time to stop using the Joey Pouch® and start using the Joey Swag® baby sleeping bag.

SAFETY & INSTRUCTIONS
Red Nose (formerly SIDS and Kids) guide: Best practises for Safe Swaddling
- Ensure baby is positioned on their back with feet at the bottom of the cot. Never place a swaddled baby on their tummy.
- Ensure baby is wrapped from below the neck to avoid covering the face.
- Sleep baby with face uncovered without doonas, pillows, cot bumpers and lamb’s wool or soft toys in the sleeping environment.
- Use only lightweight wraps such as cotton or muslin (bunny rugs and blankets aren’t safe alternatives as they may cause overheating).
- The wrap shouldn’t be too tight and must allow for hip and chest wall movement.
- Make sure that baby isn’t overdressed under the wrap. Use only a nappy and singlet in warmer weather and add a lightweight onesie in cooler weather. Refer to our guide of What to Wear with the Joey Pouch Swaddling Bag.
- Provide a safe sleeping environment – safe cot, safe firm mattress, safe bedding and smoke free environment.
- Babies must not be wrapped if sharing a sleep surface (including bed-sharing) with an adult.
- When baby is able to roll from their back to their tummy and then onto their back again during supervised play (usually 4-6 months), the use of a wrap or swaddling product can be discontinued for settling and sleep. The child is now able to be placed to sleep in a safe sleeping bag.
SIDS and Kids. National Scientific Advisory Group (NSAG). 2005. Information Statement: Wrapping babies. Melbourne, National SIDS Council of Australia. This information statement was first posted in October, 2005.
Babies over the age of 4 months can usually roll over in the cot. Red Nose (formerly SIDS and Kids) recommends that once your baby can roll, they can be placed in a safe baby sleeping bag (i.e. fitted neck and arm holes, and no hood such as a Bubbaroo Joey Swag baby sleeping bag). Keep baby’s head uncovered when indoors or in a car. Ensure baby has no head coverings, such as bonnets, beanies, hats or hooded clothing. Put them on their back but let them find their own sleeping position. The risk of sudden infant death in babies over six months is extremely low provided baby sleeps in a safe sleep space.
