With so much on offer, we’ve put together a short and sweet list of some of the most child-friendly hotspots around Australia that offer activities for all, as well as family-friendly caravan parks for you to stay in. Pop these onto your itinerary for your next family holiday.
The South Coast of New South Wales The Illawarra region just south of Wollongong is a gorgeous stretch of land where the mountains meet the sea. Spectacular lookouts speckle the coast along various grades of hiking trails and family-friendly beaches.
Towns to visit that deserve a mention include Shellharbour, Kiama (home to the famous Kiama blowhole), Jamberoo, Gerringong and Gerroa. You’ll find caravan parks all along the coast with plenty of options in Kiama, Windang and Gerroa. If you’re headed this way, make sure you check out the Scarborough Pub. The view is incredible and the food’s not too bad either.

Located along the eastern coast of Victoria, Gippsland is rich in unspoilt beaches, lakes and mountains. Holiday parks can be found within close proximity to the national parks as well as nestled on the edges of lakes.
Highlights of the area include bicycle-friendly rail trails, wilderness coastal walks and the famous Ninety Mile Beach that you can literally spend a day walking up and down.
Tropical North Queensland
Queensland’s tropical north is a treasure trove of natural landscapes. Perhaps best known for being home to the Great Barrier Reef, it’s a must for any trip around Australia if you haven’t already been. You could also look inland towards the Atherton Tablelands and the Daintree Rainforest for hikes amongst overflowing waterfalls and lush forests teeming with wildlife. For the best of both worlds, base yourself in Cairns where there are multiple holiday parks to check into, as well as a range of free camping sites. Just watch out for crocs!
The Limestone Coast
Halfway between Melbourne and Adelaide is the Limestone Coast. While it’s a haven of beaches and sunny water-based activities, it’s also renowned for its heritage-listed caves, lakes, wetlands, local eats and exceptional wineries.
Being Australia’s biggest volcanic region, the Limestone Coast offers a landscape of volcanic cones to marvel at and crater lakes to canoe on. There’s a stack of underwater caves, which you can snorkel or dive through as well.
The area’s wetlands also make for great on-the-water trips with the kids where you can bird watch and fish.
Busselton Home to the longest wooden jetty in the world, Busselton overflows with family fun and is a large town with all the modern conveniences and amenities. Below the famous Busselton jetty is an underwater observatory where kids can get up close and personal with marine life in their natural habitats without having to get wet.
For a little bit of respite from the tourists, set up camp in one of the parks near the sleepy coastal town of Quindalup or further west along the coast near the beautiful outpost of Eagle Bay.
There’s an exhaustive list of kid-friendly destinations across Australia, but with the perfect mix of outdoor activities and nearby facilities where the kids can mingle with other travelling families, these destinations are a great place to start.
